    Guest Speaker

Sylvia Chinner introduced Jean Greer McCarthy, who with her husband Ross, own and operate Greer Homes.  Last year Jean was awarded as one of Canada’s top women business owners.

Jean chairs the May 30th  Relay For Life, which is destined to raise $100,000 in Lethbridge this year.  Carol Sheahan is the organizer of over 100 volunteers, and 700 participants who will maintain a 24 hour team track relay.  In addition to a relay, it is also a celebration , party, candle light memorial, and an opportunity to meet cancer survivors for support and fellowship.

    Catch The Relay Bug

Jean introduced the video of this emotional event.  More information can be found at www.cancer.ca   She urges us to run for life, it’s the endorphins and the physical activity that helps a person to conquer cancer.  Funds raided go to information and research towards prevention, cure and support afterwards.    The ten member teams will tent, walk, jog, all night long.  Jeans eleven year old son is heading up a team.  Supporters can purchase $5.00 luminary candles from Scotia Bank, The Bay and from the Cancer Society.

    Bridge In Retreat

David and Shirley report a great evening of Bridge, but are very worried that Peter is being lured away by the hi-energy game of Bunco.  David is now offering cut rate prices of $1.00 in an effort to offset the Bunco craze.  “Wayne, you better back off Peter, he’s ours” warns the worried Admiral of Bridge.

    Computer Club Thanks

Elisabeth and Beatrice publicly thanked Judy for staying overtime to turn us loose in the U of L library computer lab, and for her instruction on Word, and law.  Club members chipped in for gift certificate to the Cheese Cake Eatery.  Thanks also to Helen Henderson who excels at Excel.  Club members each contributed their respective knowledge throughout the four month period.  We practiced software applications, discussed and displayed digital cameras, Kelvin disassembled and re-assembled a computer, our own Judge discussed the legality of software piracy.  After golf season, we plan to resume.

    Sjoert Calls Home

As Rotarian Sjoert Zuidhoff found he was the only person at last week's meeting -Easter- he phoned from Montreal to tell us that three Group Study Exchange members are coming from the Ukraine.  We will host them in Lethbridge on May 17 to May 19.  Lethbridge East Club has changed their meeting date to May 19, 6:30 at Ericksons, and invites all Lethbridge Rotarians to come meet the members.  If you can billet one of these three men, please e-mail Sjoert  sjoert@telusplanet.net or Bob Hironaka at: hironaka@uleth.ca

    A Life Of Its Own

Darrell Alexander, who can hardly wait to become President in 2004-5, gives glowing reports of the Centennial project to enhance Galt gardens.  A funded master plan study has been approved by city council.

    Welcome New Rotarian

Loralee Burton was introduced by Elisabeth Nelson as an enthusiastic and energetic mother and almost CA.  Frank inducted Loralee and deferred the Rotary pinning to Elisabeth in anticipation of a(nother?) harassment complaint.

    Sew What?

Hanski spent most of her Easter week holiday with her host family’s Grandmother, which she thoroughly enjoyed.  In that week, she sewed, more Rotary vests, pillow covers, tops, pants and got a good start on a quilt for her cousin back in Finland.    She will miss the sewing competition, as it is on the same weekend at the District Conference.

    Sergeant Dawna

Our SAA started off with a happy buck for finding she is one of 24 influential people in Southern Alberta as listed in the Business File.  Lloyd is happy that he officially retired after 37 years, but went back three days later on contract to the Mounties. George Varzari is happy that his mother is doing well after triple bypass surgery, and happy that he is being inducted into the College hall of fame.  Linda S us happy her daughter is home, and never missed a class all semester.  Geri is happy that her fundraiser brought in $28,000,  Bernie is happy that John Hoopfer hosted a successful fireside chat.  Ron J is happy his Daughter in Law came in second in a half marathon in Italy, happy that his wife was in her glory at the French Film Festival, and especially please at the Rotary Club hospitality in Fort Macleod.  Tania was happy to participate in the big bike fundraiser, and happy her sister is doing well after radical surgery.   Jennifer is happy her daughter passed the bar. . . exam.

Daniel H (next week's Sergeant At Arms) is happy to invite tips e-mailed to his snitch hotline at daniel.heaton@telusplanet.net  or phone his work at 320-7007, home is 381-4560. The snitches will remain anonymous, and the best tipster will be rewarded,  Marriage commissioner Chris Y us glad his daughter is 9, (7 years to go?).  Dick was quietly happy his daughter came back from Edmonton to reclaim her four kids for the summer, until she goes back to university.  He’s also happy his grandson’s Austrian hockey team is now 4-1-1 and placed 6th in 18 teams.  Robin Hood is cheered that he attended a successful “Stay In School” program, and was slightly late for Rotary, but not late for school.

Stephanie the red headed dragon lady is calling for dragon boat rowers to pull together.  Darrell Alexander paid for the Lethbridge Herald’s announcement that he is now Rotary President.  Dawna paid a buck to plead for a centrally heated tent for her cancer Relay Team.

    Here Comes the Judge

Ron J drew for the day's winnings.  Linda S took home $10, and Cam Lavoie scooped $5.
