Meet Isabel

Bernie officially introduced Isabel Kδser who is our incoming exchange student from near Zurich, Switzerland, and thanks all who took her for an outing.

Isabel thanked Jamie for letting her help in Jamie's house moving, Austin for his visit and introductions, Wayne for visiting the Birds of Prey and the College, Peter and Olive Green for Friday's visit, the McArthurs for the Medicine Hat trip and Pat Killoran for the Cardston Parade and Waterton trip, and Mike and Bernie for their visits.  "I was really busy, thank you all."  Isabel has her own webpage linked to the Rotary home page.

Bernie accepted the banner and Swiss flag which we shall fly for the rest of Isabel's year.

Bernie also displayed a banner from a recent Aussie visitor from Booragoon, West Australia, Dist. 9460

Attendance Flexibility

Bernie is issuing more make-up (not out) meeting credits for committees and suggests we can also do make-up meetings on the Rotary cyber club at http://www.rotaryeclubone.org/ where you spend a few minutes, answer a few questions and print off your make-up card.  BabyDoc will be happy to have more make-up eh?  This link is also on the <Links> page on our website.

Blood Donor Challenge

Bernie asked for and received permission, (no objections) to giving Dorinda at Canadian Blood Services, the Rotarian contact phone numbers so she can schedule a talk at your place of business on the need for more blood and to increase the donations for the Rotary Blood Challenge.  How about a challenge between the banks based on percentage of employees donating?  It could be organized by the Collections Department.

Bernie accompanied his 17 year old son to his first blood donors clinic.

Richard D King Is Coming

Brian Treadwell gave an impassioned talk on the benefits of bringing a future Rotarian to the September 9, Evening meeting at The Lodge to hear Richard, who was RI President two terms ago.

Summer Lottery

Our major fundraiser will be front and centre on the Rotary float in the Whoop-Up parade.  Rotarians are invited to take a shift on the Whoop-Up grounds to hand out applications to purchase tickets to win the Cadillac or other prizes. Robin and Kendall handed out hundreds of cover letters and Lottery applications that Rotarians will deliver to houses in their respective communities.  The car and boat will also be on display at the Air Show.

Family of Rotary

Peter Green spoke of the wonderful visit with Isabel and how she entertained the family.

Peter claims Bernie twisted his arm until he accepted the position to head the Family of Rotary committee in which we will develop more partners events, involve families, involve Rotaract and Interact members, keep widows and widowers of Rotarians in the loop, inform club members of family sickness or celebrations.  Peter asks that you keep him informed.  E-mail: oapgreen@shaw.ca

Here Comes The Parade

Richard Beck has the float decorations on order, insurance paid for, flat deck arranged, place of decorating (Highway Service on Saturday, 9:00 a.m. show room).  The float will feature the Polio Plus Iron Lung, the Rotary Summer Lottery Cadillac, the Rotary wheel, Rotary banners, a dozen kids and plenty of decoration.

Needed:

Thanks to Chris for the use of his truck to bring the Iron Lung from Olds, and thanks to all the Rotarians who are signed up to decorate, but there is room for more at this fellowship event.

Rotary Foundation Contributions

Thanks to Rotarians whose contributions have been reflected on the RI website**. Note: others have also made contributions, but due to timing between sending the contributions to Toronto and then on to Chicago, there is some significant delay before they appear: **Tania Warren,  Ron Jacobson

Another Irishman Lost

Bernie presented Robin D. Hood with a Paul Harris Fellowship Certificate to replace the one made out to Robin O' Hood.  Robin claims he is no longer drinking and fighting as much, or at all, because he is no longer Irish.  And if you believe that blarney. . .

Sergeant At Arms Report

Robin D. Hood thanked Pat Killoran for his XL Roy Rogers impersonation at the Cardston Parade.  He fined Beatrice for not letting him take Isabel out on a date because he was beaten out by Austin, Wayne and Peter.  It reminded him of his youthful attempts to get a date, and worst of all, look who he lost to.

Compulsory Happy Bucks from: Dallas paid for touring Robin to places on the golf course he had never before seen, and for practicing his butchering of the golf course.  Dawna paid to promote beef (did we tell you she is arranging the beef on a bun for the parade volunteers?)  Clint paid for un-Rotarian language on the radio.  Chris Yauck for being off topic on a recent TV program.  Dale Martin Jr. will be offered the opportunity to sign up for a pre-paid fines arrangement.  Wayne Stewart, who has an appointment at the Gimbel Eye Clinic was fined for driving by braille.  Birthday people were allowed to pay happy bucks; they are:  Randy Thiessen; Jeff Warren, no funny cracks; Jack Yaeck for celebrating with a little Sherry; Dawna, aka Eva Gabor of Green Acres; Peter who learned English as a second language; Chas for being in a Funk; Dale for being missing; and Chris Murray, whose warranty has expired on this birthday.

David C. Senior paid for 25, er make that 24 years of wedded bliss.  Just seems like 30 years, eh Hoppy?  Jack was happy that Ken Lewis and his LCB Gold Band had a good Sunday performance.  Helen for 1400 lbs of saskatoon berries, John for 43 years wedded, Elisabeth for the great reception Isabel is getting, Wayne for Doug McArthur's food preferences (below), Peter for 49 years married, Charles F for being missed by lightening.

Red Tags Off

Mark Deblois and Beatrice lost their red tags, good going, guys.

Vocational Talk

Lorne Armstrong admits to being married for 23 years to a wonderful lady who lives with her mistakes.  He has three kids; 20, 18 and 16.

He works as Branch Manager for BMO here in Lethbridge.  His career with that company began with Nesbit-Burns in Calgary in 1987 during the bull market when he sold for 10 to 14 hours a day, because the sky was the limit.  He was so busy he missed the crash in October of that year.  Fortunately, the company was bought out in August by the Bank of Montreal for two and a half times its book value.

Six years later, he transferred to Lethbridge because he wanted shorter travel times to work.  Shorter is better, eh Lorne?  He moved Calgary clients with him after reminding one of them that he had never met him in five years of doing business, so moving to Lethbridge would not have any effect.

For six months his family did not unpack in the hopes he would want to return to Calgary.  But "they began to like me again" and start voicing opinions that they would never want to go back to the big city.  His wife came to work to help him out for a couple of months.  That was nine years ago, and she has taken over the place.  Lorne gave the required pitch for new business.

Guest Speaker

Lottie introduced Matthew McHugh who is our Ambassadorial Scholar for District 5360.

Matthew will be going to Ireland in September to study conflict resolution.  He then travels to Port Elisabeth University on the southern tip of South Africa to further study in a Conflict Resolutions Program there. He first learned of the Rotary Ambassadorial Program from Bill Cade and Nancy Walker.  His application, three written essays, and two interviews won him the position.  He has been in e-mail contact with Rotary members in South Africa, and a Canadian student in the University there.  At Maple Creek, he regularly visits two doctors who moved from Africa, to get views of that part of the world.

He looks forward to continuing his work with North American natives after studying the end of African apartheid.  His 90-photo slide show highlighting Alberta and Canada went past at high speed.

Matthew concluded: "Thanks for supporting me, I will represent Rotary with pride, confidence and integrity."

Draw

Ollie took home $10, and Peter Green $5.

"We endeavor to tell the truth in all reporting."
