Bernie Carriere posts this Calgary Hockey game review.
The game was held this past Saturday, December 28 in Calgary. Bill Gillott, past District Governor, took his wife to hospital with chest pains and she is to undergo more tests, so he was unable to attend.
Now the goods on the game:
Our Lethbridge "Rotary Lineup" was severely depleted, therefore I had to heavily recruit players from both Calgary and Lethbridge.
Calgary Rotary was soon off to a 4-1 lead, and in spite of our new recruits lacing on the skates for the first time as a team, responded to a motivating speech (beer and munchies available after the game).
Our offence kicked in, took the lead and never looked back. Final score, we think, Lethbridge Rotary 12 Calgary Rotary 10. It was an advantage for Lethbridge, as our average age was perhaps 15 years younger than theirs. (OOPS)
A special game for Daniel Heaton, he was on a line with his father Ken and his brother Howard.
Calgary does want a return match here in Lethbridge. This is likely in the spring, and we anticipate more local "Rotary Content".

Hanski Report Hanski enjoyed one Christmas at Elisabeth (was) VanMill's and another Christmas at the Anderson household. She thanks us for her Christmas bracelet, and is grateful that she can wear it home because her suitcase is going to be very heavy. She taught us how to say Happy New Years in Finnish, which was much better than our Merry Christmas. Soon we will be bilingual. Jah?

Sergeant At Arms
Newly married Elisabeth What'sYerLastNameNow?, is our January SAA. She leapt to the challenge by fining Lloyd Hickman and Clint Dunford for being the only Rotarians to attend last week's non-meeting. Kendall and Ed Fuzzy-Face-Fetting were fined for volunteering unsuspecting Rotarians for Sergeant duty. Happy bucks from Linda BabyDoc-Storoz for the well oiled Casino, and for her upcoming meeting with the Judge(s) on FAS. Dale Merchant was happy to have gone on the rounds with our new Interacters delivering Christmas hampers to 24 new Lethbridge families. Each delivery was one box of toys plus four boxes of food and Christmas cheer. Bruce from Sunrise was happy that LCI Interacters and club members put on a Christmas day choir at Blue Sky Lodge. Lloyd Hickman is happy that many RCMP members who served at the G8 Summit will be awarded the Queen's Jubilee Medal. Gord Jong is happy that his next door neighbour attended the meeting today, giving him a once-a-year welcome. Clint is happy that all three of his grandkids came for Christmas. Ed Fetting stretched the bounds of propriety in his happiness that service clubs must be getting along because the Kiwanis Club President is allegedly sleeping with one of our Rotarians. One bean in the pot for each time, Gord, and keep counting. Romeo Paulhus is happy that we can still observe the Julian calendar and celebrate Ukrainian Christmas tomorrow.
Good one, Elisabeth!
Next Week Meeting Moved
Bankok (not Bangkok) Restaurant will host us next week, Jan 13, 2003. It is located on the east side of University Drive, just north of the Safeway store. Approach can be made from north or south. Will somebody phone Clint and Lloyd to remind them please. . .
Executive Meeting
Jan 14, 7:00 p.m., Stringham-Dennecky Office.
Guest Speaker
Doug McArthur introduced Linda Roberts, President of the Lethbridge Chapter of Kids Help Phone.
Linda showed a short video and gave a talk on the organisation. The phone number: 1-800-668-6868 gets an average of 1006 calls each day, and 2,900,000 hits on the above website each year. Each year they receive 3800 suicide calls. The lines are staffed 24/7, every day of the year.
Do kids need help? In 1995 - 45,000 kids were in custody. In 1997, 13 kids out of every 100,000 committed suicide. Annually 48,500 run away from home. Professional counselors with a minimum of 4 years service answer the phones. Kids Help Phone is the first contact. They have a database of 30,000 listings at hand to refer these kids to resources in their own community.
Male callers make up 26%, females: 74%. Age of callers: 63% are 15-19, 23% are 10-14, and 15% are under 10 years. Of the callers, 23% speak French.
Parents Help Line
The Parents Help Line has lots of helpful hints and online resources to use when tearing out your hair isn't advancing your parenting skills.
Student Ambassadors
Student Ambassadors are high school students who act as a national network of Kids Help Phone representatives. They inform their fellow students about what to expect if they call Kids Help Phone.
In 2001:
The Buck Stops Here
Kids Help Phone does not receive government money. Corporate sponsors and private donations pay for the $2,000 required every 6 hours to keep the help phone operating. Only 9% of funds go to administration.
You can send e-mail to Linda Roberts for more information on the national organisation or local chapter.
Thanks, Linda
Fifty-fifty Draw
Linda drew winner Chuck James for $10.00 and Bill Cade for $5.00
Trouble in Paradise
Chuck James, upon the advise of his lawyer David Hughes, is contemplating suing President Frank for the rest of his winnings on the advertised 50-50 draw. He reasons that if 135 people in attendance entered the draw, then, fifty percent of the winnings is much more than $15.00 paid out. Shall we ask our Sergeant At Arms if this legal action passes the 4-way-test? Well, how about the smell test?
