John Fills In
In the absence of the official spokesperson for the Rotary Dragon Festival, John Hoopfer says this year's event set for June 28-29 is well underway. Major committees are: Race Committee, Chris Hansen of Sunrise Club. Communications Committee, Kendal Gibson. Corporate Funding Committee under Jack Yaeck. There is also a Volunteer committee and an Executive committee. The offshoot Lethbridge Paddling Association will have its first dry-paddling meeting and practice on January 28. The members will progress to wet paddling, and submarine practice under the watchful eye of Peter Green. In-depth paddling analysis may be conducted on the 19th hole. Or is that the wrong sport?
Last year, 85 volunteers looked after 19 teams. This year we expect 29 teams. Pretty darn good presentation from John who read from his cuff, eh?
Drawski
John Hoopfer drew Marlin as winner of $10 and Hanski for $5.
Computer Club
Helen Henderson will review the exercise in Excel in which we imported a Word document to create a club members directory. She also promises to show how to develop formulas. Are all you financial gurus attending? We hope so. January 28, 7:00 p.m. at the University Library.
Child Find
Rotarian Ellie Peters is the Lethbridge and District Office Manager (Volunteer) for Child Find. During the last school year, she arranged for 25,000 local kids to hear about the organisation and learn how to protect themselves from abduction. One Lethbridge child was accosted, and drew on his knowledge to escape and call police. Ellie has attended 35 schools where over 4000 students have been fingerprinted.
Child Find has taken on a life of its own and has grown beyond what Ellie can handle. Her office cannot contain the Child Find traffic, and she needs some visible space for a volunteer to take over some of the workload. As a charitable organisation, she can issue receipts in lieu of rent. Ellie also needs volunteer teachers to take on a minimum of 90 minutes a week to talk with students in the schools. There are other jobs like distributing posters, attending collection boxes, and fundraising.
If you know of any person with time on their hands, or whose plate is not completely full, this is a great opportunity for service.
