Incoming Exchange Student
Beatrice, our inbound councilor says: "HELP".
Isabel will be arriving from Switzerland this summer. Loralee Burton will host Isabel for the second quarter. Three more host families are needed. Each year, 10,000 kids go on Rotary exchanges which began 75 years ago. Student adjustments can be interesting; Fort Macleod welcomed a young fellow from 45-degree C Bombay, India, in the middle of winter. He is a vegetarian who enjoyed his first host family on a cattle ranch. E-mail Beatrice for more information.
Guest Speaker
Stephanie introduced Dorinda Emery from Canadian Blood Services who spoke on our Rotary Club Invitational Challenge to collect 2004 units of blood in the next 12 months.
Canadian Blood Services is a not-for-profit organisation that manages blood donations from coast to coast, with the exception of Quebec. 4500 employees from clinic staff to research staff and 17,000 volunteers who donate 262,000 hours annually collect 800,000 units of blood from 455,000 donors.
The Lethbridge Clinic on the second floor of Lethbridge Centre, collects 10,000 units a year from 8,000 donors. Only 2000 of the 8,000 donors live in the city. 30% of donors are members of the Hutterian Bretheran. Less than 3% of Canadians donate blood, yet 8 of ten believe there is a blood shortage in Canada. In the U.S. and U.K., 5% of the eligible population donates.
Who Can Donate?
Donors must be between 17 and 71, not taking injected insulin, and not having tattoos or body piercings in the previous 12 months. Interviews of donors are done in complete privacy, and you can chicke. . .err, I mean BACK-out at any point. If you do not qualify for any reason, your attendance at the clinic still counts towards the Rotary challenge.
Blood Shortages
An aging population is reducing our donor base. Aggressive treatment of cancer requires volumes of blood. A local high school teacher required 72 units of blood in his treatment of leukemia. The students issued a grad challenge and met that requirement. Organ transplants and heart surgery also require units of blood per person. There is no substitute for blood, but the steady decline in supplies means people will be dying for lack of donations by 2005 if donations do not increase. Each unit donated can save up to four lives.
Blood Donors experience a relatively painless and safe procedure that takes 45 - 60 minutes including four to ten minutes of bleed time during which 1/10 of your total supply is taken. Testing, interview, resting and sampling free coffee, pop and cookies takes up the balance of the time. It takes four to 12 hours to replenish your blood supply, but you can only donate every 56 days.
Why The Rotary Challenge?
Rotary enjoys a wide base of business people who can challenge their employees, family members and business associates. Ask them to sign the Blood Challenge sheets to make their donation count towards our club's tally.
See the web link at the left for more information and photos of the opening day.
Sergeant At Arms
John Harmer has been waiting a long time for his first day as SAA. He fined Ed Fetting for all the news coverage he has been getting compared to elected people. Brent paid for not taking over Air Canada's western routes. John Keenan paid for keeping the LCC Foundation auditor waiting. Happy bucks from Jim McMullen for five great years of Rotary, and umbrella bucks for the Japanese Gardens plans to provide season's passes to people who can use the quiet time. Dale Junior for remembering way back to 1977-78 when guest Ron Butcher was club president and they met at the Marquis Hotel. John called Dale up to receive his certificate as a Chiropractic Assistant. Frank did not get fined for suggesting that Junior practiced on his customers. Linda S is happy that Frank is going into the cosmetics business. Dennis Chinner for the $110,000 Cancer fundraiser on the weekend and happy that Tom got a nice hair cut. Seamus is happy that enrollment is up and happy the University President will pay the buck. Dick for all the support the beef industry has been getting. Ed for Chris Murray's support and proudly serving Alberta Beef. And happy the new SAA has been eating beef and thus can see over the lectern.
Draw
Dorinda drew Ryan Miller for $10 and Jim McMullen for $5.
