    Barbershop Quartet

Stephen Graham selected the newly established quartet: Jack Reynar, Joe Montpetit, Romeo Paulhus and himself, and promptly led them through their first public performance.  Wild applause and shouts of encore got us promises of more at the Passing of the Gavel at the Eggert Ranch on June 21.

    Last Board Meeting

Frank will be bidding his executive farewell at the May 13 meeting in Paul Pharo's office.  He will be a wiser, thinner man when this is all over for the year.

    No Longer New

John Harmer lost his New Member's red tag as he fulfilled the basic requirements.  Welcome aboard again, John.

    Hanski Report

Hanski was in Banff for three days with other exchange students.  They had one night of camping, a gondola trip, horseback riding, and a team-building exercise.  From there, most students traveled to Medicine Hat to attend the District Conference, where they trooped in their country's flags, spent time at the Leisure Centre, and believe it or not, enjoyed the speakers.  (Hanski's words).  When she got back to Lethbridge, she slept for two days to cover the nights of not sleeping.  She attended a show with her host sister, visited a cattle ranch near the U.S. border and called home on Mother's day.  In her school dance class, Hanski has been invited to design the costumes.

    Over In Vestment

Myles now has two Rotary vests, both created by Hanski.  One is for sale.

    SAA Report

Daniel got happy bucks from: Stephen for his new quartet, Dale for getting on the plane to New Zealand and Australia, Les Talbot for a great evening of Bunco at John Keenan's.  Jamie was happy to take home multiple Bunco prizes.  Doug McArthur for Air Canada's new slogan, "We're not happy 'til you're not happy."  Lottie for being invited to speak at the District conference, and her daughter's receiving a millennium scholarship.  Mike is happy that Mel Clewes was justly recognized at the Summer Games.  Ken Lewis is happy that Robin got frisky during the singing of "Let Me Call You Sweetheart."  Robin gave a gay buck instead of a happy buck.  Bernie for flying off to Fiji then Australia.  Murray's entire table each paid a buck to be happy for his article in the Lethbridge Herald.

Daniel H  invites tips e-mailed to his snitch hotline at danielheaton@telusplanet.net  or phone his work at 320-7007, home is 381-4560. The snitches will remain anonymous, and the best tipster will be rewarded.

    Vocational Talk

Doug McArthur took the time to cheer on his favourite Calgary Flames before introducing Richard Hebert, the Y's guy.  Richard became CEO of the local YMCA after serving time in Medicine Hat, Brockville, and Brandon.

WE CARE  The triangle logo was copyrighted in 1890.

The triangle represents Spirit, Mind and Body as one.  The Y, has programs for every age group from pre-schoolers to seniors.  Health and fitness allow us to handle stress; flexibility increases the muscle's ability to stretch and to repair itself.  Building strength increases the ability to do work, and endurance strengthens the ability to work continuously.  Exercise improves balance which deteriorates with age; coordination is a learned skill to conduct a series of movements.  Power is the ability to move muscles quickly, and agility is the ability to coordinate muscle movement quickly.

The Y also deals with health detractors: drink, smoke, drugs and coffee.  Eating habits, quality and quantity are part of the program.  The goal is to keep you healthy.

Richard brought the 1910 gavel and box which is inscribed with thanks to Rotary for helping to keep the Y going from 1919 to 1926.  Two skinny Rotarians won one month's membership for correctly answering his quiz.

Thanks for your energy and enthusiasm, Richard.

    Rotary Blood Challenge

Stephanie and Wayne gave a short introductory talk on the Invitational Rotary Blood Challenge which begins on May 16, just ahead of the Victoria Day weekend.  Rotarians are asked to donate, to enthuse friends, neighbours, and employees to donate.  Canadian Blood Services will track the donations, so tell them you are donating on behalf of the Downtown Rotary Club.  See The Blood Challenge presentation.  Canadian Blood Services are scheduled for a presentation in a couple of weeks.  Honorary Chair Lottie Austin will also be speaking on her personal experience as a recipient of blood.

Canadian Blood Services is on the second floor of Lethbridge Centre Mall.  If you are turned down for any reason like low blood count, your donation will still be recorded.
