Guest Speaker:
Nancy Walker introduced Dennis Fitzpatrick, Associate Vice-President, Research, University of Lethbridge, who spoke about the development of the Water Institute for Semi-Arid Ecosystems (WISE). About 25% of the world is semi-arid, including Southern Alberta, where 5% of Alberta's agricultural land produces 20% of net farm income. Water is the single most limiting factor in our environment, and it is critical that we balance the health of the environment with the health of the economy. WISE is a research collaboration which will bring together research resources to focus on large issues such as water quality and public health. The objective is to make information available to decision-makers so that good decisions can be made.
