The Vasilator presiding,
Greeter Romeo Paulhus introduced:
The New Deal
President Frank introduced the concept of the weekly name draw being for a lunch card that entitles your guest to free lunch. The idea was stolen from Lethbridge Sunrise. In a general show of hands, the idea was implemented.
Calgary Millennium Club
This provisional club will start meeting Sept 4 on Wednesdays at 12:15 pm at the Greenwood Inn in Calgary.
Re-entry
Jamie Torry had a great weekend with students returning from exchanges and meeting new incoming students. Pat Killoran and John Hoopfer were also in attendance and had a great time.
Live Free For A Year
Dennis Chinner says some fantastic proposals came in from the Request For Proposals which are charitable projects looking for funding to be supplied by our "Live Free For A Year" project. The charity must be named before we can receive a license to run the lottery. The ad will run one more time in the Lethbridge Herald, and proposals will be presented to our general membership.
Black Tie Bingo
Georgina Knitel says "all systems are go" for this great fundraiser. Jamie Torry is co-chair; Elizabeth Van Mill and Geri Hecker are also members of this hardworking committee.
Good Trade
Murray Anderson introduced out incoming student Hanna Haikka (Hanski) from Finland who enjoys sports, sewing, and hiking. She has two brothers, 23 and 20. Hanna will be staying at the Anderson household for the rest of August, then moving in with Elizabeth Van Mill in September. Take Hanna with you on outings when you have the chance, please.
Out of the Dragon's Mouth
Next week David Hughes and John Hoopfer will report on the >profits< of the dragon boat races.
Annual Dues
The money went to Rotary International, so please pay if we are carrying you.
Sergeant At Arms
The ever popular Ed Fetting became more popular when he fined Frank for exhibiting Chrétien like democracy in calling a vote for those in favour of the latest wild idea, but not calling for a vote of those opposed.
Happy Bucks
Romeo was happy to be the greeter, and happy to be back. Dawna C was happy for last weekends' wonderful golf tournament and thanks to many Rotarians. Pat (Irish) Killoran was happy to have spent the weekend with Hanna and other inbound students. As incoming Whoop up President, he is happy with the smoothly proceeding event this year.
Chris Murray was happy to have the opportunity to enjoy Lottie Austin's most inspiring speech last week. Bill Glover was happy to break 100 in golf, even though he still had (eight?) holes to play. Dave Cassidy was happy that Elizabeth Van Mill earned her motorcycle license and also bought a motor cycle.
Elizabeth is happy to report buying a 1400 cc (more powerful than a VW) motorcycle. Wayne was twice happy, once to have Angie Vasil at Rotary, and also happy that Angie keeps Frank busy enough that he can't phone Wayne. SAA Ed was five times ($) happier that Angie could keep Frank busy enough that he couldn't phone. Gee Angie, you have a lovely, rosy complexion.
Murray was $20 happy that he and his wife were going to live free for a year. Their two daughters are gone to Europe for the year. Jeff Warren was happy to have attended the summer games and see Bernie C's son win a medal. Bernie Carriere was suddenly inspired to be happy too.
Bridging the Gap
September 14, Myles Bourke will host the first bridge party at 7:30 pm. Beginners and others are welcome, but Bill Gates is not expected to attend.
Guest Speaker
Doug McArthur, who is in charge of guest speakers, introduced John Usher, Dean of the Faculty of Management at the UofL.
John was born at Grimsby, England in 1952, moved with his family in 1954 to Canada where his father began work at General Motors, Oshawa. John's brother started on the line, and worked his way up to a robotics engineer. John attended the GM Institute in Detroit, now renamed as the Kettering University where he earned his MBA.
He went into the GM plant, on the floor as a shift working bean counter, then transferred to an on the road job in manufacturing sales, and later to strategic planning.
Both John and his wife attended the University of Toronto, from there to Edmonton U of A, off to St John's Nfld. and finally back to Alberta at the U of L. He gave a presentation on the Faculty of Management where he has been employed since July 1.
Rotarians questioned John on the possibility of evening courses for business men. John felt the College was in the best position to provide that opportunity. Questions of Internet based training for middle management were also deemed to be best provided by the College. He answered David Hughes question saying he is not familiar with the distinguished speakers program, but suggested a lunch time program in its place. Hey take it easy on him David, he only started there on July 1.
The Vasilator presented John with the gift of sight.
