GREETINGS

from the

ROTARY CLUB OF SUVA, FIJI ISLANDS

DISTRICT 9920 (received, Jan, 2004)

To District Governors of Districts 6990,6950 and 9220, to Presidents and Members of the Rotary Clubs of Pinellas Park and Miami South, Florida, the Rotary Clubs of Fullerton South and La Jolla Golden Triangle, California and the Rotary Club of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada.

On behalf of the Members of the Rotary Club of Suva, Fiji Islands, I extend our deepest gratitude for the financial pledges you have made towards making our Club's Project of providing a 15 seater Van for the Samabula Old Peoples Home, a reality. Meeting this urgent need for the Home definitely would not have been possible without your combined support. Our Club Members are overwhelmed by this support and how quickly the support came together.

Your prompt pledges enabled us to have RI President Jonathan Majiyagbe, on the 20th January, to hand over the keys of the Van to the Home.

I extend my sincere thanks to Past Governor and International Director for the Rotary Club of Pinellas, Richard Breske, for taking the lead and handling the necessary paperwork. With your busy schedules, I appreciate the co-operation from District Governors and Club Presidents, with Richard, to ensure this paperwork and finance is in place, as soon as possible, so that not only the keys can be handed over but the VAN as well.

We have secured media publicity and will forward this to you as soon as we have completed the file. In the meantime, I copy you a photo of our President Jonathan in the Van with one of the old folk.

I wish Presidents continue success for the remainder of their Rotary year and a fun time for all in the process of your efforts for service above self.

It would indeed be our pleasure to host Club Members should there be the opportunity for a visit to the Fiji Islands.

Again our sincere appreciation for Lending us a Hand with this significant Project.

In Rotary Service

Elizabeth Clayton,

President

Project Description:

The migration of the poor from the countryside to the towns, caused by the failing Sugar Cane Industry, has increased the housing needs in the populated areas where building requirements are more formal. The project is born from this migration and the need to develop a subdivision concept near Lautoka. The Fijian government has provided funding for the purchase of 10 acres that will subdivide into 87 lots. The project deals with the servicing (roads, water, etc) of this property so the construction of ROTOHOMES can begin.

Greetings Friends

This is to acknowledge your very important donation of $800CDN = $1,121.81 FIJI which was to expedite the engineering planning of the subdivision.

We are into stage 2 and I have approached local charities in our District 9920 for funds to help us with that.

It is looking complex…….but Monday the Fijian gov’t paid the landowners the $40,000 so we are legally obliged to proceed now…..not that I need reminding of the urgency.

I have enclosed receipt #RR0091. Also a copy of the official submission to the Town and Country Planning Dept where we submitted the plans. We are moving very fast now and it is so encouraging.

I have recanted and refined the design on the Rotohomes. The three volunteers are making steady progress on the MK4 home in the city. This has taught us a lot about concrete etc.

Your donation was extremely important to a fast start and progress to date.

Come back soon folks.

Vinaka vaka levu (translation: Thank you very much)

Rotarian Pat Killoran visited a housing project in Fiji, near Lautoka in 2002. He took photos of new Lethbridge Rotary Club houses, and some of the houses they replace.

A widowed lady who receives $28 per month gov't support in her old shack.

This picture shows Linda K and Peter Drysdale with a family with 4 kids and some visiting adults. The father is dying of kidney problems, the uncle is also dying of TB and the other lady's house leaks so bad she moved here. The mother receives $28 a month to support her family and spends several days a week begging on the streets of Lahtoka.

Peter Drysdale and Pat K backed over this steep ditch nearly rolling the vehicle. There were lots of things to be thankful for on this day!
