The Whoop-Up Bulletin

Written by Editor Judy Head

Vol. 84, No. 16 March 11th, 2002

Greeter David Lodermeier welcomed guests John Harmer (Donna Coslovi),Kim Servers(Stephanie Salonen), Shawna Romolliwa (Karen Romolliwa) and Greg Smith (Darrell Alexander).

Sergeant-at-Arms:
Lots of happy bucks today. Kendal is giving one more week of grace prior to charging people for sitting in the back row. Next week is at Anton's wonder how he's going to manage this? Bring your happy bucks next week.

Seniors Service Award:
David Hughes was contacted by the Mayor's office last week. They are looking into proposing us for the Senior's Service Award.

Chiaki's Week:
Chiaki had a very busy week. Basketball Champion Tournament, although they lost both their games and a few tears, I overheard Chiaki stating that she had lost 5 pounds! She had a great time at the Rotary Weekend in Red Deer. Sang Karoke, swan and enjoyed good food and companionship with Megan our outbound student heading for Belgium this summer. Chiaki is very thankful for Rotary. Don't forget to give Chiaki a call at 381-1889 and include her in your upcoming plans.

Vocational Talk:
Harvey Heck shared the interesting story of himself. Harvey is the Manager of ATCO Gas and began his career 28 years ago with North West Gas. A native from Provost, Harvey received his Business Admin. degree from NAIT with his major in accounting. After graduation he cracked the lineup as a ball player for the Junior League. After an unsuccessful phone call to Dad for funds, Harvey became a labourer for North West Gas. A tricky balance no doubt between the 'two loves of his life' baseball and Patti (his wife of 28 years). Harvey's hard work ethic rewarded him with a full time position and soon after a move to Wetaskiwin in 1982 for 15 years. In 1997 he made a difficult move to Lethbridge and left family, and a great community behind. Harvey became the Manager of ATCO Gas on January 1st, 1999. There have been many challenges of downsizing, de-regulations and franchise retention but Harvey continues to succeed with his positive attitude, and commitment to life long education. He is a proud grandfather and father to three - Ryan(25), Randy(23) and Rochelle(16). What a great addition to our line up in the Rotary Downtown Club. Thanks Harvey.

Live Virtually Free For a Year Campaign
Lorne Armstrong, albeit not with the classiest of segways from Harvey's presentation, gave an update about the "Live Free For a Year Campaign". The Medicine Hat News insert was provided along with a list of possible categories to target. Our job is to assist in providing local businesses with the opportunity to participate. The higher the retail value, the higher the amount of coverage received. Prizes can be either permanent (fridge, stove etc.) or temporary (use of a car for a year etc.). The benefit for the donating business is two fold 1) receive advertising of retail value in Lethbridge Herald, and 2) possible renewal of services etc. from prize winner for following years. The benefits are similar for the Lethbridge Herald also. The benefit for Rotary - $100,000! No tickets to sell! No chickens to fry. No hot Rotary Booth at Whoop Up Days. Lorne needs more volunteers though to present the promotions to local businesses. Rotarians would receive the first right of refusal to be the 'A' patrons. Contact Lorne if you are able to help.

Presentations:
President David presented Dieter Witzke, the principal of Westminster School, with $4500.00 today. Dieter was grateful, as this will allow the Breakfast Program to continue. The program currently provides a healthy start for over 220 students. Perfect example that Mankind is our Business.
