Rotary Golf Tournament
Wayne Stewart is chairing this year's prestigious event on June 17, 2002 at the Lethbridge Country Club, with a 12:00 start. Dinner to follow - please contact Wayne if you have prizes to donate.

Chiaki:
Wild and crazy week for this girl… Had a chance to meet and play piano for composer Howard Cable who was in town to accept an Honorary Degree from the U of L. She said she was very excited to get her first kiss from an eighty-three year old man. Not sure where she intended the emphasis: first kiss or 83??? Saw two movies: Hugh Grant in About a Boy and Spiderman who seems to legging far behind Hugh in sex appeal. Chiaki, just wait till Hugh is eighty-three - imagine how sexy he'll be then.

Past President's Car Rally/Treasure Hunt:
Seems to have died a natural death. Maybe as club members we are already max'ed out with driving and trying to locate misplaced treasures like our keys, cell phones and palm pilots. Perhaps we should substitute a "Meal on Wheels" event in the rally's place.

Fireside Chat:
Marlin Konynenbelt is hosting this event 7 p.m., May 29th. Bring snacks and BYOB. Call Marlin for his address.

Paul Harris Fellowship:
Awarded to Tanya Warren for her substantial contribution to the Foundation. She accepted the award and a sapphire pin. Tanya's parents were here today as she expressed her deep appreciation to them for the fine example they've set for her in doing public service. Way to go, Tanya.

Dragon Boat Festival:
Volunteers needed to help at the event and Paddlers to man and woman the oars. (No gender discrimination on this slave ship). Jack Reynar is the Honorary Chairman for the event and is determined to have it remain an honor only by steadfastly refusing to have any useful information on the planning details. Call Murray Anderson for details on this event and look for the sign up sheets at the regular meetings.

Guest Speaker:
Peter Scott, past editor of the Lethbridge Herald spoke on the challenges of producing a community newspaper owned by a long-distance corporation.

Five myths exploded before our eyes:

  1. The Herald has a specific political affiliation - no, Virginia, there isn't one. This is an equal opportunity paper.
  2. The corporation determines editorial content. Nope. It's all locally created.
  3. The Herald only prints the letters supporting its point of view. Wrong. Ninety-five percent of letters are printed. Those omitted are ones in very poor taste, libelous (usually the writer is contacted to see if the letter can be re-worded to be more suitable), or the points being made are becoming repetitious. Particular pains are taken to print letters criticizing the newspaper, just on principle
  4. The Herald avoids hot topics. Not true. (Temporary editor's note - I can vouch for this as I have before me a recent article on selecting Chili peppers).
  5. Advertisers control newspaper content - absolutely not!!! Well, maybe kind of. News is news and will be printed in the news section. Don't hold your breath waiting to see an article on which new Motor home has the highest rate of spontaneous combustion in the RV trading section.

After the meeting stuff:
President not-wanting-to-surrender-the-reigns-a moment-too-soon Dave tells me the torch will be passed to President Elect I-can-hardly-wait Frank at an event July 15th.

sexciting. . . ?
