    Are You Finnish?
Hanski tells us about the school system in her native Finland, which is similar to school here. The have one year of pre-school, 6 years of elementary, 3 years of Jr. High and then choices of 3 years in high school or 4 years in vocational. They learn to English and Swedish as foreign languages.

Peter Green suggested via e-mail that we publish Hanski's phone number so we can invite her on day trips. However as all Rotarians were e-mailed a Word ™ document which also has Elisabeth VanMills' "Canadian Mother to Hanski" phone number on it, we will not make the listing available on the World Wide Web. But then Peter thinks Finnish is "The End". Is Peterski Finnish?

    Sergeant At Arms
Ed presented another stellar performance after two week's rest. He extracted happy bucks from Elisabeth who is happy to have a growing family including Hanski. Ellie is doubly happy to have had a successful Bridal Show with donations to Child Find. Wayne was happy Frank is beyond telephone range. Bruce is glad to be back and glad we did not sing as terribly as last week. Doug McArthur took a vote and paid for a whole table of happy people. Jamie is happy Austin is back to play the piano. Dale Merchant is happy his basement is being repaired after the flood and threatens to tell Marlin's nickname if the job doesn't progress fast enough. Murray Anderson is happy to tell a golf story, some of which might be true. Bernie was happy to collect last year's Black Tie Bingo prize of a sailboat trip with Bev Thornton and "Whatsis-name" her husband. Daniel Heaton was happy to tell a semi true story of winning a tournament. Chris Murray is happy to tell of BabyDoc and six other specialists giving his son excellent treatment for autism. Ed Nestorowicz is so happy both daughters are off the payroll that he will practically give away the next Nissan, well almost. John Keenan resorted to bragging about a big golf win. Georgina Knitel was bubbling over happy to tell of moving to an acreage and expecting a blessed event. Bob Cole was very quietly happy.

Not content with all that loot, Ed fined Harvey of Natural Gas fame for winning a propane BBQ. He fined Mike Marcotte for having his name published. Karlin McDonald paid for impersonating Joyce Fairbairn, and Gord Jong paid for bringing his wife who looks so good that we look bad.

    Umbrella Bucks
Tania paid big time to pitch a one week getaway all inclusive leaving Jan 17 for a destination south of Cancun.

    Guest Speaker
Doug McArthur introduced Mayor Bob Tarleck who spent 36 years in education, 18 years as alderman, boasting a wife Angela, two daughters and grandkids.

Bob began by saying that both he and Dan Heaton think short jokes are out. He noticed that his past student Dee Hebert left before he began talking "probably because she heard it all before".

Bob feels Lethbridge is poised to enjoy an even more improved economy, more jobs. Lethbridge is developing partnerships outside the city with twenty two surrounding communities as they promote the area as a destination for tourism, sports, culture and business. He notes that Lethbridge Lodge previously did not want sports teams staying in the facility, but noticed vastly improved revenues when sporting events came to town, so are now ardent promoters of sports.

Bob thanks Paul Pharo for his interest in initiating an economic development initiative.

Downtown redevelopment has caused considerable anxiety through the need to develop a model for homeless people so those who wish to rebuild their lives can do so. He says the Sik-ooh-kotok* centre has been very helpful. The downtown has great hotels, restaurants and interesting buildings. Some have been rebuilt with business on the main floor and residences above. He feels the area has done well to attract seniors and needs young people to create a vibrant feeling in the downtown core.

*Sik-ooh-kotok: Blackfoot name for Lethbridge, meaning "Black Rocks", you know the ones found in the old number 5 mine, and which also appeared along the river banks.
