From Kara, June 3, 2004

WOW, this is the last group email!! I'm not sure how you all feel about that, perhaps some are disappointed

and some are relieved!?? whichever the feelings is the truth is that I only have 14 more days in Norway left!

Its been. It's been. It's been something else! These past 10 months and a bit have been life changing! I

know that for sure..what in my life it has changed I'm not so sure about! I feel like I have short term

memory..for real! its hard to look back and believe that everything really happened and I haven't actually

been dreaming! I don't think that I could ever sum up my experiences in a few words and I don't know how I

will answer any questions about my time here! I'm completely floored that may is over and my plane awaits me to come back to dear old Canada! It seems like I just left, I feel the time certain days but other days it feels like I just got here!

I really have seen so much, and I've been so lucky!  I've been even luckier to have the support at home that I have! You all have been so great keeping in touch and reminding me that I have something to come home to! I'm nervous to come home, but I think its only natural! I know most things will fall back in place and seem like I never left but I also know that some other things may not ever be able to be "normal" again! In a sense though I think its a good thing cause I know that a lot of people have troubles getting themselves out of the same old routines and are afraid to leave the familiar, but I have a feeling that in the future this year will help me to avoid all those things! Does this make sense!? I know what I'm trying to say..perhaps I should wait a while to make such a point!

okay, lets get to the good stuff!

In 4 days I am going to CYPRUS! wow, wow, wow! I'm so excited! I'm going with my host sister who is 20 to a

resort outside of Ayia Napa! We are going for a week, and we are staying on Nissi beach which is supposed to be one of the nicest beaches ever! For those of you who don't know Cyprus is divided into the north being Turkish and the south being Greek! we are staying in the south and I'm more than ready to eat Greek salad and swim in the Mediterranean!! After our fantastic trip I am coming home! we get back on the 14th from Cyprus and then my plane for home leaves on the morning of the 16th!

PAY ATTENTION!!!

I will be into Calgary at 11:00pm on the 16th. Its a Wednesday!  It will take me a while to get through immigration and all that whoop-la so for those of you who are coming to the airport its okay if your there just past 11. Now this is important( I know I haven't told you all of this mom but you'll think its a good idea just read on..)

If you plan on coming to greet me upon my immediate arrival then you can call my sister at 208-2282 in

Calgary and find out where the meeting point is at the airport! All are welcome. I would really love to see everyone! but don't worry for you Lethbridgers who cant come, I'm coming down south the week after to spend some time! Its hard cause my mom has moved so I don't have a house there anymore..but I'm coming to visit for a while at least! But I will be living in Calgary! okay, okay back to the plans... after the airport and a few tears we will all go to my babe of a brothers house for some snacks and what not! If you need a place to sleep then you are more than welcome to crash with at my brothers! I will be spending the night there. I cant guarantee any sleep though! Bring a sleeping bag or some blankets..in case! So from the airport we can make a train of cars that will follow my mothers New truck(that I cant wait to drive) to my brothers place! so lets just say that you don't want to go to the airport..or you get lost after leaving the airport I

will include my brother's address! If you need special alternatives to the plan above then only call my

sister(Jen) and make different arrangements! My brother's address is: 138 Arbour Vista Close NW

Its just off crowfoot so that's about it...I have 4 more days to visit with people and pack up all my crap! I've packed all these things so many times, I'm so glad that this time I'm packing it to come home Surprisingly enough I cant think of anything else so ill say goodbye..for now! And I will say hello soon! it would be great if ya sent me an email and told me if you were coming on the 16th just so I have an idea who's coming!

mucho mucho love

Received May 12, 04

Hey there, I really hope that this doesn't take very long cause its already 12:40 am and I would like to have been in bed a while ago! But yes, I am doing wonderful here in Norway. I've had some trouble cause things are not going very well at home. I received some news that has been really hard for me the past few days. I wont say much about it, just that I have a family member that is very sick. Id suppose I just never thought that something like this could happen during my time away. I always new it was possible but I didn't think I could have ever been prepared. I have faith though that it will be okay and that I've made the best decision by staying here in Norway and finishing my year.

Before the bad news came I was having the time of my life traveling through Europe. I'll give you a quick over view of what the trip went like! ENJOY*

BERLIN-I didn't expect Berlin to be as gorgeous as it was! We saw the Berlin wall and traveled through the east side of town. There is a still a huge division amoung the people there. It was a true privilege to see it all and experience the atmosphere.

Prague-We spent a lot of the time on the bus, especially when we were making washroom stops; you're right; most of the time it was because of me. There's no way I could pee on the bus)! The drive into The Czech republic was very similar to the country side at home.  The only difference was the huge castles and ancient buildings.  We did a lot of sight seeing in Prague and the day we left was the day the country entered the E.U. which was a very important day in European history! We didn't get to experience much of the night life cause our hotel was 20km's outside of the city. Prague was very cheap and known for its Garnet and glass.  We walked through an old castle and its courtyard.  It had absolutely
everything..even its own cathedral! It was breathtaking! The best part was coming out if the cathedral and seeing Rhonda Ketch from Red Deer. It was complete insanity. She is spending her year in Switzerland and we were both on our euro tours at the same time! I was so shocked. I think all we did was cry for the first 10 minutes while we hugged. It was the best feeling in the world to see a familiar
face! We went to the center of Prague where we saw the old clock tower. The clock was very special cause it not only told the time but also the date, the month and the astrological sign! The next best thing happened when we saw Team Canada walking the streets. We were so thrilled we got our picture taken with them and tried to make them talk to us..they weren't as interested but it was still really cool! The hockey championships were going on so there were tons of hockey fans there..we were so lucky*sigh*

Vienna- Now the scenery became mind blowing. We drove again for hours but I couldn't sleep at all cause the Alps were coming into view. Our hotel in Vienna was very modern which was a huge change for us. We left early the next morning..

Salzburg-Wow,wow,wow! I have no idea how people live here without screaming every time they look outside! Austrian's were some of the nicest people we met on our trip and the hills were really alive with the sound of music! We stayed in a hostel that was a little nicer than the others..you could wash your clothes if you had 4 hours and 5 euros. I decided to skip it(probably not the best decision) I was
happy enough that I had to only share my shower with 3 instead of 20. We went to a dinner theater show of the sound of music! The city was magical..surrounded by the alps! I could see how so much art and so many creative people come from there.

Zurich-The day coming into Zurich was exhausting. We were in the bus from 9-7 and we passed through 3 countries before arriving in Switzerland. Austria-Germany-Liechtenstein and then beautiful Switzerland! We got to our hostel and only rested for a few minutes
before we were off again to go into the city and look around. Everything was already closed by the time we got into town..which was a good thing cause it was hard walking past Gucci, Armani, Chanel, Burberry and all those fun shops! I suppose the prices would have talked me out of shopping alone even if the shops were open! Switzerland was very expensive but I couldn't leave without buying some Swiss chocolate!

Lyon-We got into Lyon at 5:30 and went out for a nice dinner. The Rotarian that we traveled with was nice and always bought us a beer or wine with dinner..so I was happy when he also did it in France. The French sure know how to eat well I think! After dinner a few of us went to a cafe, it was so precious..like a fairytale! we stayed in a hotel that was very old. We spent the rest of the night chatting and bonding!

PARIS-now the real fairytale begins. We stayed very close to the center..in a hotel with an elevator made for one! I spent the first night with a friend just walking around feeling the atmosphere. I cant really explain it! The next day was jam packed! We went to the castle of Versailles. We stood in a huge line for about an hour, then we took a walk through the former house of the French monarchy and Mr. Bonaparte! The castle's gardens were huge and filled with tourists. After wards we went to the Eiffel tower, it wasn't until the next day that we took the lift up. I expected something a little different..but it was still very impressive! Last but not least we went to Notre Dame. I even got to light a little candle in the great cathedral! That night we went to the Eiffel tower and we were surprised to see it light up and sparkle on the hour. My last day in Paris was very nice! We went to De Louvre and I got to see the Mona Lisa! There was a huge crowd around it but I was able to snap my picture before the crowd devoured me! In the famous museum we also saw an Egyptian exhibition and one from the 1700's. The artwork was very elegant and romantic! During the afternoon we went to a cafe for lunch and then spent the rest of the day shopping! not to shabby! At night we took a boat down the canal and went under small bridges that all had their own story! It was a little scary going under the one that had collapsed 13 times!

London- I forgot what it was like to be in a English speaking country..its been so long! I was very thankful to be able to read signs without any stress! it was strange though to hear people speaking English and not because the had to but because it was they speak that language! aww, it was nice! Our second day was sightseeing in rainy London! The rain didn't help my exhaustion that was catching
up with me! We saw Buckingham palace but we didn't get to stop cause the president from Poland was there and security was crazy! We also saw the London tower, tower bridge and the memorial for Prince Albert. My dreams came true at night when we went to Her Majesty's Theater and saw the phantom of the opera..a true classic! It was strange to get into a taxi later and be on the other side of the road. Our last day in London and our final day of the tour was my 19th birthday! So naturally is spent the day shopping with close friends! I spent heaps of money on very useless things and had a ball doing it! But I sure did look cute that night when we went out for Greek food. London was very charming and full of tradition..I really liked it! F.Y.I I traveled a total of 4066 km by bus! YUCK!

Okay that's the end..now I'm on my way to bed and I hope that you have all enjoyed the short novel about my trip! Time will soon be up and I will be back home..(on the 16th of June for those of you who just deleted my last group email! haha) I am so excited to see everyone once again..I hope time is treating you all well! Take good care..and start preparing
for my return! all my heart~

From Kara in Norway

HEI HEI, How is everyone!? I myself couldn't be better! I have been so busy the past month I have no idea where the heck march went to! wherever it is, its not April and I'm off of school for a week! I spent the last two weekends away. The first on my rotary trip to Oslo. We went to see the world skiing championships. unfortunately I saw NOTHING because it was so foggy! it was crazy. there were tons of people all sitting around in the rain and cold trying to get a glimpse of a jumper. I became very uninterested fast and spent most of the afternoon trying to convince someone to leave...ha ha! it was an interesting atmosphere though, the way people were sitting out there enduring such conditions!

The weekend after I went to a ski resort about 4 hours for me. Its called Hafjell, it has some of the slopes that were used in the 94' Olympics in Lille Hammer( I say that like I skied on them! ha ha). It was gorgeous! I went with a family here in my rotary club, they rented a cabin. We could ski right from our room! It was great!! I managed to escape with zero injuries, so I believe that that constitutes as a good weekend! Now I think that brings us to the present time where I am waiting to start dinner. I'm making dinner for my family tonight! they find it entertaining to have me cook! ha ha..which is perfectly understandable!

I am not only anxiously waiting for dinner but I'm also awaiting the arrival of my wonderful mother who will be here in 5 more sleeps! I still cant believe that I will see her so soon! I try not to think about it but sometimes it overcomes me and I feel faint. The thought of being able to see a familiar face kind of scares me in a way. Its been 8 months today and I didn't expect it to feel the way it does. Its extremely hard to explain the way I feel, I guess I thought that I would feel like a different person and more serious. but I still feel like myself and I also feel something that 6 months ago I could never fathom feeling. I FEEL NORMAL! its incredible. going through day to day has become a regular life! I suppose that's why when I found out my return date to come home I got mixed feelings! I am coming home the 16th of June. I know that its a little earlier than what we all thought before I left but there's some things that I have to get home for and those things have a time schedule on them! I'm not upset to be coming home then. I am actually really looking forward to it! I'm just thinking about leaving here and how strange that might feel. I am ready to come home and it will be so nice to be there, its just that I never expected to have made some of the relationships that I have! I suppose though that it just makes me lucky. right!??

But before that time in the future I still have 2 more important events coming up. on the 20th of April I move to my last family. The date got delayed 3 different times but they are ready for me to come now. so I will live there until I come home. But 2 days after I move in with them I am going on my much anticipated Europe tour! So I will be gone for 2 weeks. back just in time for the Norwegian national holiday! I will have 5 weeks and 4 days left once I return. which seems kind of pointless to move in with a new family and do all the dreadful beginning things. but I guess it'll be okay! Okay well this email was supposed to be short...they never are I guess! Have a beautiful Easter..I hope you get nice weather! My host family is putting their boat out on the sea on Wednesday! I cant wait! Keep in touch. you can reach me at Bryggeveien 17 3120 Tønsberg Norway my phone number is 47-33-32-21-29.. anytime after may 7th! and don't forget the special day of May the 6th..a little someone will be 19! I will be in London for the actual day but I'm positive that a late happy birthday is better than none at all! Take good care with all my heart

God Jul Alle Sammen ( Merry Christmas everybody) This is just a quick note to send my Christmas thoughts to everyone!

I am still doing great here in Norway. We got some snow the other night and it actually stuck around, so I'm planning on making a snow man as soon as I get the courage to go out in the cold!

Last night for dinner I ate a traditional Norwegian fish called lutefisk.. it was interesting! ha-ha, my host mother promised me that it was alright if I didn't like it she would understand. Its not that I didn't like it, its just that the texture of it reminded me of a hard boiled egg...and I'm not very found of hard boiled eggs! ha-ha, but I ate it and the experience is past me now. I've been hearing about this lutefisk since the fist week I was here..so I was interested to try it. They preserve the fish in an acid for months, it use to be really common years ago when they didn't have a freezer or anything.. I'm just thankful that now-a-days we do have freezers and we can eat fresh fish..much better!

My upcoming plans are to go to my families cabin in the mountains for a couple days.. I'm scared to go cause you have to cross country ski just to get to it ..and I haven't been cross country skiing since I was like 8..( I blame you for this mother)!! After that I'm not sure what the next month has in store, besides the year turning to 2004..ALREADY!! wow, times flying by!

In the middle of January all the rotary exchange students are going for a ski winter camp..but I won't be going cause I got an opportunity to go to France and Belgium with a sociology class at school! I'm not in the class but I heard that this class was going to spend a week at the European Union and The Human Civil Rights Court, having lectures and what not! I knew I had to go, so I went and talked to the teacher.. and now I have to ticket to France! He's not even making me take the class..haha, I'm really excited to go, I think it will be great to see such organizations!! Well, Christmas is just a few days away and it breaks my heart that I'm not at home with my family and my friends, but I know that I'm going to have a million other Christmas' at home so I'm just going to try and enjoy myself here as much as possible!

Take care everyone,
with all my heart * Kara *

Hi Beautiful people!! How is everyone!??

Well we FINALLY got snow.. and I was soooooooo excited! I was beginning to wonder why I had come to one of the northern most countries in the world!! Well first thing is first, I have moved and my new family is just great!! We get along really well! They have 2 sons so they told me that they didn't really know what to do with a daughter.. but I think they are handling it very well! The two best parts about living here is the scenery, the house is right on the sea! Every morning when I wake up I get to watch the sun rise over the water...aww its gorgeous! The next best part is having a dog!! They have a Siberian Husky... who doesn't understand English.. but we still get along good! ha-ha

They are very different from my last family so I think I will be able to learn a lot!!

This weekend I was in Goteborg, Sweden !! It was very similar to here! The city was much bigger and the shopping was better but everyone looked the same and the Swedish and Norwegian language are almost identical! so I don't know what my excuse is for not understanding what anyone was saying!! I spent a good deal of time in Top shop.. I was excited to go there. I've always seen the store in British magazines and I've always wanted to go there! Besides that I saw Cats again.. and it couldn't have been better! I don't have much to write about, it's beginning to seem like I'm finding a bit of a routine.. I'm sure its subject to change but I've been really active the last couple weeks and that's the way I want it! School is getting better, I've really gotten to know the people in my class..which only took 3 months! But its all looking up..I will let you all know if there are any further changes!! I really hope that everyone is doing well, I think of you all.. ALL the time!! My family, my friends, my teachers... I wish you all the best! with all of my heart,

Kara*

*Bryde, I got your email!! Thanks for writing.. its nice to hear from you!!

Received November 3, 2003

Hello beautiful people.. how is everyone!?? As the months go on I seem to be hearing less and less from everyone but I guess that's a good thing cause it means that your busy and not grieving the absence of my presence too much!!

I can never remember what I have written or who I have told what to so there is a huge chance that I will repeat myself..my apologies! Where do i start, well first let me say that my thanksgiving dinner was a total hit.. no one ended up with food poisoning and i have a sneaky suspicion that the dinner party of 12 may have even enjoyed my cooking!! ha ha

School is school and rotary is rotary! I didn't know much about either of them here, I don't have much contact with people from school and I have almost no contact with people in my rotary club.. sorry to burst anyone's bubbles but that's the way it is! I'm seeing what I can do about it, my host families and my rotary "contact" are having a meeting tomorrow so I will see if I can persuade any change! And before anyone says anything I have already tried several things to be able to do something at school but it looks like I'm going to have to think of something else to get something out of the school year here.

On the brighter side of things I am getting a lot of cultural experience, geographic also! This past week I went to Finnmark ( the northern most district in Norway) to a town called Alta. So I passed the arctic circle and ended up just a little bit higher than the 70th parallel!! If you can I would suggest that everyone look at a map because it so hard to explain how far north I was. Alta has no sunlight in the winter and no darkness in the summer.. I would go bonkers living there all year round! The oldest buildings there only date back to as little as 55 years ago because( I didn't know this and found it extremely interesting) during the second world war when Germany occupied Norway the Soviets set fire at their border to Norway and everything was burnt down. There is so much to learn and at times i feel like my little brain is on fire with all the new information I get!

Next on the agenda for me is on Saturday when I was be attending the theater to watch Cats in Oslo!! I am so excited to see it, then the weekend after I am moving to my second family! I cant believe I am moving already, time is going by quickly, then the weekend after I am going to Sweden.. ahhh life is difficult ! ha ha Alright well I wish you all a good time in my mother country, and if anyone would like to write a letter I will also write my address for my new house!! Dukenveien 34 N-3133 Duken Norway the phone number is 47 33 38 58 45 Their last name is Tonnessen

with all of my heart

*Jennifer what is taking you so long in teaching your child how to walk?? ha ha, I hope you guys get my package soon
*thanks again for the book Tania!!

Hei hei, how is everyone!?? I am doing very well, I was thinking about how boring these emails must be for some of you, but I am afraid that I do not have any good ideas on how to spice them up so you will just have to read on and pretend to enjoy them on my behalf!

Alright well here goes, I just got home yesterday (I går) from a trip to the west coast. We went to Bergen and was amazingly able to find some family there! It was great, ever since I was a child I have always dreamed of going to Norway and seeing the place where my grandfather is from! It was an 8 hour drive on roads the size for one car.. the west coast is filled with mountains and waterfalls! I was in complete awe at the sight of the gorgeous scenery! I met my grandfathers cousins, I went to an island called osterøy to see a farming community called Bernes, which for those of you who don't know is my mothers last name! I was so excited to see the place I even took a picture of the sign.. I'm sure you all predicted that I would have anyways! ha ha, it really is great to know that I have family here in Norway, its what I have always dreamed of. I did some shopping also, I love the malls here, I could spend hours in them..!!!

When we were in town I saw a group of missionaries so I went up to them and asked them where they were from, one was from Nevada, and the other was from Montana! It was great to talk to them, just because it was a familiar sight for me!! Also when we were in Bergen I saw their national costumes, every district has there own design of the Norwegian national costume and the one for the Bergen area was gorgeous! I would love to have one to bring home, but they are murderously expensive! So unless I get one as a gift I don't think I will be brining one back!

Tonight I am going to the theater here with my host grandmother, it is a dance show and I am really looking forward to it! My Norwegian is coming along.. we are having a test on Tuesday on how much we have learned so far! It should be alright, we have only learned the basics so far!

well I shall go now but I hope you are all doing good!

Take care
love Kara

*thanks for taking the time to answer my questions Mr. Findlay!
*To all my girls, I miss you all so much! thanks for keeping in touch, I love hearing from you all!

Hallo everyone!!!!!!!!!

I just wanted to write and tell everyone about my trip to Denmark!!! It was great, we took a ferrie from Larvik, a town about an hour away from tønsberg, to Freidrichstand Denmark. I was with all the other students and about 150 other Rotarians for the district conference. On Saturday all the students, myself included, introduced ourselves.. in Norwegian and said something about our country!!! The rest of the time was dedicated to shopping and eating wonderful danish pastries!! The ferrie we took was enormous.. there was a movie theater on it, lots of different restaurants, shops, A DANCE FLOOR.. which didn't entice me in the least on our way home because I was exhausted!! That was my trip in short... so I hope you are all doing well! I start dance this Wednesday at stage door.. I'm taking Brazilian lessons... ha ha it should be interesting!

take care

love Kara

Subject: hilsen fra Norge( regards from norway)

Alright, well I just wrote a huge email and then I lost it.. so here it goes again!!

I wanted to let you all know how much an average house is here... for an ordinary 3 bedroom home its about 1.5 million!!! honestly, I couldn't even believe it when I read it in the avis(newspaper)!!now, of course with the conversions it makes it a little more relative to houses in Canada, but its still a lot more expensive!

I climbed the mountain Gaustrotopen yesterday, we climbed to 1881 meters above sea level! it was like walking up an avalanche.. but the view was terrific! we could see into a town that was deep in a valley, the town goes without sunlight from November to February!! the town was also involved in world war 2 when Germany was trying to capture it because it has an abundant amount of water that can be used to make some type of bomb.. imp not sure exactly what, all I know is that Hitler wanted it!! it was really neat to see everything.. and I felt very proud of myself that I made it to the top!!

School is difficult.. and its really hard to accept it because in the past school has never really been that hard for me, except for math!! but yes, so now every class here is math, I'm taking political history, new history, religion, Norwegian, gym and dance.. but because I have no idea what's going on in my classes I haven't been able to get anything out of them, so far! except for in gym.. I have learned that at home people are a lot of personally modest.. because here after gym class EVERYONE takes a shower.. and there are NO doors!! yes.. so I caught on very quickly in gym.. haha

Before I go I want to let you all know that the best chocolate on earth is made here.. melksjkolade!! yummm, as soon as I am able to part with any I will send some your way!!

take care.. I love you all
Kara

pat, I have now heard from my rotary club, so its alright

happy bday Ryan, I cant wait until our journey air guitar/drums/vocal band can get back together!!

I HAVE BEEN TO THE END OF THE WORLD!! I seriously have, it is a special site here about 30 mins away from tønsberg.. and as you probably guessed its not really the worlds end.. ( verdens ende) but it honestly looks like it. its just open sea.. we went bathing there.. haha i still have a hard time calling swimming bathing!!! It is a very different feeling swimming.. i mean bathing in the north sea, i enjoyed it very much though...

I havent watched that much t.v but they do get MTV and CNN.. which i will watch to keep up on my current events(just for you Mr. Findlay) but the rest is in norwegian or with norweigan subtitles! well I go to Denmark next weekend for the rotary district confrenece, I am really looking forward to it.

Tønsberg's sentrum ( city centre) is so adorable. The buildings look very victorian, and the streets are very narrow and most are made out of little stones!! I went out for lunch with my host grandmother to this cafe that overlooked the sea. Everything here is like a postcard, with all the little shops that have clothes you only see in vogue.. everyone is very fashionable here.. its amusing to see guys all the time that are prettier than most women.. hahaha!! Things are more expensive here, but the hardest thing to get used to is the conversion.. its hard to buy an icecream for 20 kroner because im still thinking in terms of our moneys worth.. 20 kroner is about 5 dollars canadian.. or around there!

well if any of you would like to send me some kind words through the post you can mail it to...cappelens vei 10 G, 3121 Tønsberg Norway !!! or if your aching to hear my voice you can call me at 47- 333 14 124

okay, okay well its time for Miss.On her own to go. I hope everything is going well for everyone.. I hope you all have fun at the college.. or university.. and i hope to hear back for everyone... that would be nice!

I am not used to everything... YET, but time is wonderful thing!!

with all of my heart I am loving you all always kara

I arrived to my first host familys house today, i spent a week at the language camp and met all the other exchange students. there were kids from all over the world, japan, brazil, taiwan and canada ofcourse!! It was amazing when my host mother picked me up, she was so nice! she had baked a pie and had my room already! Everything has been a little overwhelming and I am feeling totally exhausted!

I have seen many different things so far, there are a lot more mcdonalds then had imagined there would be!! ( i knew you would be relieved to know that lindsey).. the scenery here is like nothing ive ever seen. It is so green and the building are so interesting.. they all look so old!

The language is hard and although the camp introduced me to it, I still dont know very much! but i shall learn, at least i promise i will TRY to learn!! well i miss everyone so much and just so you all know I blew a kiss into the wind today hoping that it makes it home.. let me know if it has!!

with all my love Kara!!

thanks for your emails...im sending some letters...and thank you to everyone who made my last couple of days sooooooooo amazing.. ill never forget it!
